Fishing for trout

What I love about fishing is its never the same day to day, one day you can be at a certain spot and catch a lot of fish using one type of bait or lure, then tomorrow, you are back in the same spot, and nothing! I am sure this happens to most of us. The first variable in finding fish is the type of fish you are after.

Is this a roaming fish or a stay at home fish? All fish roam to a greater or lesser extent. The most important thing in a fishes life is food. Some fish stay in a particular part of the lake, river, or ocean. Lets start with a medium sized lake in S. Calif. ( or wherever, fish react much the same way no matter where they live ) Say you want to fish for trout. Most of the lakes in So. Calif. have trout in them. The Calif. Dept. of Fish and Game stocks most of the lakes and streams, with catchable size, 8 to 10 inches, ( bass, and striper bait ) but who cares?

Most of the bait I use in the ocean is bigger than this, plus the flesh of hatchery trout is grey and mushy. If you want a chance to catch BIGGER trout, you need to go to one of the pay to fish lakes. They stock trout up to and exceeding twenty pounds, and lots of them. Most of these fish are reared in shallow ponds, so when they first stock them they are usually found in shallow water.

I have caught most of my over ten lb fish within 10 feet of the bank.
Tomorrow, BIG fish, BIG bait!
