Bass Fishing - Flipping (2/4)
Flippin has been described and written about many times, and there are many videos on the flippin presentation, so I will not go into great detail here. To flip a lure you put your reel into free spool, grasp the rod in your right hand while standing on the front deck of your bass boat ( you really need a bass boat's stability to do this properly, but any kind of stable boat may be used.)
Now point the rod at 11 O'clock and free spool the line until the lure hits the water. Now take your left hand and put it under the line right in front of the reel ( the line should be against your left little finger ), now stretch your left hand fully out horizontally, pulling the line with it.
Now free spool the line again until the lure is about one foot above the water, now put the reel in gear, you only use the reel to wind a fish in to the boat. Now we have the correct length of line to flip with. I take a magic marker and mark the line where it inters the reel, now I don't have to go through the whole procedure every time I catch a fish. So as we lift the lure out of the water, we bring the rod to the 11 O'clock, at the same time we pull the line out to the left with our left hand. We let the lure swing back towards us, then with a gentle flippin motion we swing the lure out towards our next target, we don't let the line go out of our left hand but keep slight pressure on it and stop it just before it hits the water. This givesus a quiet, splash less entry into the water. This may sound complicated, but, you can practice standing on the bottom step of your stairs, or a small piece of plywood on four bricks. This will help you a lot when you go to the lake for the first time. Practice until you can put the jig into a tin can full of water with regularity. That is the size of the target you will be aiming at on the water.
